Marye Lou Shanklin Connaughton
Marye Lou Shanklin Connaughton, age 87, passed away peacefully into the loving arms of her Lord and Savior on January, 14, 2014 in Naperville, IL. She was surrounded by her 3 much loved and loving children, Richard Connaughton of Naperville, Barbara Connaughton Gurtler of Mandeville, LA, and Marilyn Connaughton of Charlotte, NC. She is also survived by 2 adored and adoring grandchildren, Marye Alexandra and Max Gurtler of Mandeville, her son-in-law Michael Gurtler , her sister, Robbie Shanklin Makous of Birmingham, AL, and her sister-in-law Estelle Shanklin of Memphis, TN.
Marye was the loving and devoted wife of Dr. Harold Connaughton for 49 years until his death in 1994. She was the daughter of the late Idis Carr and Irvin Shanklin. She was also pre-deceased by 5 brothers, Layne, Boise, Neil (Lula Mae), Hale (Virginia) and J.C. Shanklin.
A native of Palmersville, TN, Marye also had resided in S. Fulton, TN, S. Haven, MI, Marshall, MO, E. Lansing, MI, Springfield, IL, Benton, KY and Naperville, IL.
She was a homemaker and mother most of her life. As the wife of a young veterinarian, she assisted her husband in his veterinary practice and also worked in retail sales and real estate after her children were grown.
She was a woman of great faith. She was an active member of the Baptist Church in all the communities where she lived. At various times in her life she enjoyed sewing, cooking, planting a garden, participating in the activities of her kids, reading, attending bible studies and church functions, playing canasta with her canasta club, antiquing with Harold and attending family reunions.
She will be greatly missed by her family and many friends. The family takes great comfort in knowing she is in a better place now. Her daughters are very grateful to their brother, Richard, for his devotion, patience and loving care of their mother in her last years.
In addition to flowers, the family requests donations be made to the New Hope Cemetery Association, c/o Kenneth Rogers, 117 Walker Road, Dresden, TN 38225. This is the country cemetery where she will be buried next to her husband, Harold. The funeral will be held on Saturday, January 18, 2014 at 1 pm with visitation starting at 11 am at New Hope Baptist Church in Palmersville, TN with Rev. Lee Tate and Rev. Jim Garner officiating. R. D. Brown Funeral Home in Clinton, KY is in charge of the funeral arrangements.
