Obituary – Dorothy Toon Edwards
EDWARDS, Dorothy Toon, died February 6, 2014. She was born on October 18, 1932 to Charles Milford and Mamie Gore Toon near Fulton, Ky. After graduating from Fulton High School in 1949, she worked first for the FBI, then with the Department of Defense and the IRS as a secretary.
She married the love of her life, Joe Duke Edwards, in 1956, thus starting her second career as a Navy wife and mother to two sons, Jeffrey and Gregory. In 1990, she completed her lifelong goal of a college degree, graduating from Piedmont Virginia Community College. A short time later, at age 61, she undertook yet a third career, becoming a successful and enthusiastic AFLAC independent insurance agent, a 20-year vocation that was cut short only by her recent illness. An active member of her beloved Bon Air Christian Church, Dottie was also a proud member of the Bermuda Hundred chapter of Daughters of the American Revolution and a frequent and lively correspondent to the Richmond Times-Dispatch. She leaves sons, Jeffrey and Gregory; daughters-in-law, Kathy and Margaret; and grandchildren, Jessica, Martin, Rebecca and Erik; brother, Bobby Toon; nieces and nephews, as well as her many friends. She was predeceased by her parents; brothers, Walter, Charles, Jewell, Bewell, Eldon and Clyde; her sisters, Imogene and Audrella and her husband, Joe Duke. A celebration of Dottie’s life will be held at 11 a.m. on March 1, 2014 at Bon Air Christian Church, 2071 Buford Road, North Chesterfield, with a reception to follow. She will be buried at Arlington National Cemetery at a future date. In lieu of flowers, please consider a contribution to Bon Air Christian Church in Dottie and Joe’s memory.
