Letters from our Readers: Shakailyn Patton
My name is Shakailyn Patton. I am 15 years old and was recently chosen as a State Finalist in the National American Miss pageant for the State of Florida. I was born and raised in Fulton, Ky. I am the daughter of Tivona (Patton) Thomas. I attended school at Fulton City High school, while there I was an honor student, played basketball, softball, cheerleading (Jr. High), and was in the drama club.
At the age of 4, I was diagnosed with a tumor on my brain. I had to learn to do things over again such as writing, and regaining coordination on my right side of my body. I have been left with hemi-ataxia in my right hand and right leg. It has been hard trying not to give up on learning how to do things all over again, but by the help of God and my Mother, I made it through. From this experience I have learned to never give up and follow my dreams. I dream of someday being a model or choreographer dancer. My family and I moved to Florida in 2013. I am currently attending Wesley Chapel High School. I am an honor student participating in basketball and volleyball.
What I want to gain from being the next National American Miss is to be an inspiration to other girls and inspire them to have more self- confidence in themselves.
National American Miss awards many prizes, scholarships, trophies, and trips. I need sponsors to help me with funding the deposits, reservations, and competitions from now until the date of pageant which will be held on Aug. 3 & 4 at the Hyatt Regency Grand Cypress, Orlando, FL.
