Obituary – Amelia Mason Samuels

Amelia Mason Samuels, 89, of Clinton, died Tuesday, April 8, 2014 at Superior Care Home in Paducah.

Amelia was born December 9, 1924 in Russellville, KY. She was the youngest of the three Mason girls Mary, Carolyn, and Amelia. She grew up in depression-era Russellville the daughter of Lela Wilkins Mason and Ewin Mills Mason who owned and operated a small grocery store. She entered The University of Kentucky in 1942 where she lived all four years in The Shelby House (a house for 4-H girls who were majoring in Home Economics). After she graduated in 1946, she served as Assistant Home Demonstration Agent in Christian County, KY. In 1947 she was offered and accepted the Home Demonstration Agent position in Hickman County, KY. During her time in Clinton and Hickman County, she met Ray Brent Samuels from Bardwell. They were married in December 1948. She and Ray lived in several places in the southeast while Ray was with Eastern Air Lines. In 1955 they moved back to Clinton, KY and opened Samuels’ Food Market. Amelia and Ray were very active members of First Baptist Church in Clinton where she was the church secretary for 26 years. She retired in December, 1999. She also taught several Sunday School classes there for 45+ years and for the last 20+ years she taught a ladies class, The Vota Vita Class, which has now renamed itself The Amelia Class. In 2010, her health kept her from that duty and she saw the need to move to Jackson Oaks Retirement Community then to Morningside Assisted Living before full-time residence at Superior Care Home all in Paducah and also became a member of Twelve Oaks Baptist Church. We would like to thank the staff of Superior Care for their professionalism and compassion which has made the last two years much easier.

In her kitchen she had for 55 years, where she excelled in making nutritious and delicious family meals, on a note inside a cabinet door, she posted a reminder which read: “Don’t criticize, complain, or gossip.” She lived by that motto everyday. She had peace in her life because of her relationship with and service to God.

Amelia was preceded in death by her parents, her two sisters, and her husband of 44 years, Ray. She is survived by her daughter, Rebecca Rae Samuels Evans and husband, Paul, of Jackson, TN and her son, Ewin Brent Samuels and wife, Pam, of Paducah also grandsons Jason Hlad and wife, Samantha, of San Angelo, TX and Shaun Hlad of Indianapolis, IN and her grand-daughter, Spencer Erin Samuels Young and husband, David, and great-grandson, Mason, all of Paducah.
